On Sunday, November 1st, EDE presents IMPROV EVOLUTION vol.2. The program begins with music improvisation and introduces three different group improvisations lead by dance artists coming from outside of Chicago. The works will exhibit varied approaches and philosophies to creating improvisations.The performance will conclude with post-show dialogue.

COMPOSED by The Architects (Michael Chorney - musician, Katherine Ferrier, Lisa Gonzales, Jennifer Kayle,Pamela Vail)

Their lifelong research of compositional improvisation reveals discovering and organizing a dance as each moment unfolds as a structuring process.

Like You Mean It by Like You Mean It (Noelle Chun, Adriana Durant, Annie Kloppenberg, and DJ Ed Luna)

Like You Mean It creates improvisational performance piece that focuses, at once, on choreographic thought and movement redefined. For Like You Mean It improvisation IS choreography.

Class Description: In this workshop we will use concepts generated from phenomenon around us both in the urban and less urban environment to explore choreographic approaches to place. We will drift through movement and ideas, arriving in eddies and pools that allow us to deepen into different states of awareness and consciousness. Class Description: Conscious Trip: Not Just Dancing Around
In the daily “performance” of living, we all compose our own experiences in real life in real time. A coherent performance of group improvisation, however, is a complex task that must be informed by rigorous physical investigation and shared inquiry as a part of that group. In this class we will engage in such rigorous practices. We stumble into improvisational dance-making in a series of scores designed to facilitate both nuanced attention and collective authorship.

Dance & Music/Sound

On Sunday, October 4th,

EDE presents Dance & Music/Sound, a program exhibiting four dance works extending traditional boundaries as well as establishing a new relationship with music/sound. The performance will conclude with post-show dialogue upon the topic below:

Dance & Music/Sound

Music is played as itself, yet it is common to view dance with music/sound. What kind of relationship those two has and how the relationship evolved in the history of artistic dance? Here, we observe and discuss how those two are related to each other and how choreographers/dance artists decide the sound/music for their works of dance. It will be also shared how each dance artist perceive sound/music differently.

Notes From a Bottle and

Alegrias by Clinard Dance Theatre in collaboration with Las Guitarras de España

Notes From a Bottle is an excerpt of a full evening work creating one part of this triptych that incorporates music and dance forms from around the world. The second piece, Alegrias, is a traditional flamenco form, though artistic liberties and innovations unique to the form have been incorporated.

O My Innocents by Basil Abbott, Sherry Antonini, Heather Hartley and Casey Murtaugh

O My Innocents is a performance abstraction of the movement from mourning and repentance to apparition and ascension.

Stridulations by Synapse Arts Collective-Stridulate Ensemble

The work experiments with structures that allow the highly expressive and entirely non-verbal vocalizations of ensemble members to interplay with the movement of their bodies, allowing fleeting, task oriented relationships to come to the fore. Beginning by regarding the friction of the vocal folds as the primary mode of human stridulation, Stridulate aims to highlight points at which vocalization becomes movement and speech begets gesture, and amplify them to a point at which they articulate an entirely new performance vocabulary.

The piece is about the relationship to memories and events and how even while they shape our lives we are reminded that we move through life, from birth to death, as an individual navigating our own unique experience.

On Sunday, July 12th, EDE presents Dance & Performance Art, a program of presenting four current works of artists from each fields. The performance will conclude with a post show talk starting from the question below:

Dance & Performance Art: Many ways of exchanges are happening between performance art and dance. It seems like the boundary between the two is getting dimmer. Yet, originally, where are they from and why those two are somehow getting closer? EDE starts to investigate why both seem to be related and what is the differences between the two, if we distinguish them clearly.

Performed by Graham and Todd Kiech, the work explors the relationship between a (wo)man and her clothes.

there is a way in which the body sleeps by Britt Posmer
In collaboration with sound art by Lisa Abbatomarco and movement and staging by Joshua Kent, the piece utilizes the question, What is it to be a “spatial necessity that has been forgotten within the economy of time?”

Weak by Marissa Perel
In collaboration with Snorre Sjonost Henriksen and Colin Self, the piece explores the density of desire and the weight of longing through epistolary-noise-pop-body-art.

Not About Elvis Dance by Rachel Thorne Germond
The piece is an autobiographical solo built on accumulation structures that probes her relationship to the King's movement style and persona.

Simply Showing

On Sunday, May 17th EDE presents "Simply Showing", a program of new and experimental works of choreography by young and established artists, interspersed with brief artist-audience conversations. Four of the five works include live music.

Program:

Craptastic by Janet Schmid

With composer Steve Jarvis and film maker Ania Greiner, the piece expresses casual violence in sports and graceful recovery from wipe outs.

Improvisational Movement Score

by Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting

An ensemble of movers and musicians shows “scores” based on ideas of support, landscapes, and looping developed from their weekly collaborative exploration.

An Age Old Question by Melissa Simo

The piece is inspired by the power of the body/mind, and the power of imagination and fulfillment. In this piece, Melissa is exploring many questions about: age, control and lack of control, and memory in the body/mind.

Andalbeitwellhahaha by J’Sun Howard

J'Sun uses radical intuition as means to be honest and not impose things on self and/or audiences members.

Movo-ment by Green Cross-Isa Wiss (voice), Asimina Chremos (dance), Ayako Kato (dance)

The group tries the initial experiment how voice transforms to movement and how movement transforms to voice.

Each piece will be followed with quick interactive Q & A which both performers and audience members question and respond.

EDE Dance Series 2009 Spring/Summer starts Sunday, April 19!

EDE is launching a six concert Dance Series for 2009 on Sunday, April 19 at 6 pm. Additional concerts will take place May 17, July 12, September 6, October 4, and November 1. All concerts are at 6 pm.

What's modern/contemporary/experimental dance?

Dance artists are often asked, " So what kind of dance do you do?" The question may be followed by moments of silence, as it is sometimes difficult to explain this complex issue in a few words. This program of EDE intends to open the discussion on the distinctions, if any, between Modern, Contemporary, and Experimental dance styles.

Program:

Erased Dance by Zephyr Dance

The first part of a longer series, Erased Dance focuses on whether it is possible to erase movement, and if so, deciphering the traces left behind once that movement no longer exists.

Feed the Guest by Julie Mayo/Dim Sum Dance

Feed the Guest explores the nature of displacement and dislocation. Combining movement with text and sound fragments, Mayo presents her works as a response to the questions: what constitutes the unfamiliar or the unknown? In what ways can the unfamiliar or unknown be engaged within the choreographic process? In what ways can displacement or subversion take place in a dance that is emerging?

Dance with Noisemaker and Music Box by Asimina Chremos/Silveerspace

Chremos presents a solo dance and sound improvisation.

Symphony in E-flat Major by Leopold Group

This piece was commissioned by the Northbrook Symphony Orchestra to visually accompany a live performance of the music. The movement was generated as a reaction to the music and also by using the visual inspiration of hieroglyphics. The dance was meant to capture the lively, quirky nature of the music with its "cast of characters."
